A JOURNEY OF FAITH AND TRANSFORMATION

by Charlene Soh, Aldersgate Methodist Church, Singapore.

Before the mission trip to Timor-Leste with my church, I thought I was simply going to teach a skill—how to sew pencil cases, hair ties, and tote bags. I expected to serve, to help where needed, and to be a blessing. But I didn’t expect to be the one changed.

At St Paul Methodist School, I witnessed first-hand how the children responded not just to what we taught, but to how we loved and encouraged them. And in those moments, I saw God's hand at work—not only in them, but in me. As we worked together, I began to understand that this mission was not just about what we were giving, but what we were receiving.

This trip deepened my faith. It reminded me that God equips those He calls and that every small act of service matters. Whether it was teaching a child to thread a needle or simply offering a smile, it all reflected God’s love for the Timorese people.

Although there were other volunteers from different Methodist churches on personal or mission trips, I saw how God had brought each of us—different ages, backgrounds, and talents—for a reason. Some of us were teachers, some were servers, others were encouragers. It was clear that God had carefully prepared each of us to contribute in unique ways. What started as a group of individuals quickly became a united team with one heart and one purpose because we all happened to be there at the same time.

Looking back, I see now that missions is not about having it all together. It’s about showing up, being present, and letting God use whatever we offer. I return home with a renewed sense of purpose, a heart full of gratitude, and a desire to continue using my gifts—for His glory and the good of others.
