TRANSFORMED BY A FAITHFUL COMMUNITY

Hi everyone. My name is Faith, and I currently serve as a Youth Group Leader in the Youth Ministry.

 

Earlier this year, in April, I had the privilege of joining a group of youths on a mission trip to Nong Bua Lamphu (NBLP). Together, we planned and facilitated a youth camp, built relationships with many young people, attended church services, and even took part in the Songkran festival, which celebrates the Thai New Year.

 

When I was asked to share about my experience, I realised I already had many reflections written in my journal. However, I would like to share the ones that impacted me most deeply.

 

From the very first day of camp, the warmth of the community was something I could immediately feel. It was not just something people talked about. It was visible in the way they treated one another.

 


One moment that stood out to me was observing the interactions among the Thai youths in the camp groups. In many youth settings, it is usually the older youths who take responsibility for caring for the younger ones. However, I noticed that even the younger youths, such as Mazda, who was only about 12 years old, were intentionally looking out for those younger than themselves.

 

The warmth of the church community was also evident in how everyone seemed to know and accept one another. There was patience, kindness, and a genuine concern for one another's well-being. People simply looked out for one another in natural and unassuming ways.

 

As I reflected on my own church communities, I realised that we can sometimes become so focused on serving, attending intensive Bible studies, or having deep discussions that we forget the value of simply being together. While those things are important and meaningful, they can sometimes come at the expense of quiet moments of fellowship and loving one another through our presence alone. Through this experience, I felt God reminding me not to overlook the simple things. I was deeply encouraged by the warmth and authenticity of the Thai church community.

 

Another moment that left a lasting impression on me was hearing the testimonies shared by the Thai youths during the camp. Many spoke honestly about the challenges of living out their faith. Some faced disapproval from family members. Others navigated the expectations and cultural norms of living in a predominantly non-Christian society. Some even travelled long distances and paid for the camp themselves in order to gain permission from their parents to attend.

 

Listening to their stories reminded me that following Christ often comes at a cost. As my team and I reflected on what we had heard, we recognised that these challenges were very real and not easy to navigate. They could lead to strained relationships, difficult conversations, and tension with those around them. Yet despite these obstacles, these young people remained steadfast in their faith. They chose to show up, to be part of the church community, and to continue following Christ, even when it required sacrifice.

 

Their faithfulness deeply challenged and encouraged me.

 

This experience has caused me to re-examine my own faith and the way I approach community. It reminded me not to neglect the simple but important acts of loving one another, and not to take for granted the freedom and ease I have in following Christ.

 

My prayer is that all of us would continue to persevere in our faith, cherish the communities God has placed around us, and keep pursuing Christ together with faithfulness and joy.
