BLOSSOMING INTO GOD’S PURPOSE

by Devi Shrestha, Graduate of Sophia’s Home, Nepal. Now working in Sophia’s Home.

Hello! I’m Devi Shrestha, also known as Debbie.

I was born into a patriarchal family, where women’s voices were often silenced. From a young age, I witnessed the mistreatment of women around me. I questioned the injustice—but every time, I was told to stay quiet. Even so, I dreamed of becoming an independent and dignified woman.

What I didn’t know then was that God had a greater plan for me—far beyond what I could imagine.

A New Beginning

The turning point came in 2008, when I was brought to Sophia’s Home. That moment marked the first step of a journey that would shape me into the woman I was meant to be.

Growing up in Sophia’s Home, life was simple. I had a close circle of friends and focused on my studies. But I also discovered a bold and curious side of myself—I found joy in stepping out of my comfort zone, trying new things, and taking initiative. Slowly but surely, I was growing into a leader.

Those years were filled with laughter, stories, and sisterhood. We shared tales from different backgrounds, sang along to Bollywood songs, watched films, followed fashion trends, and experienced both traditional and Western influences. We laughed, cried, and prayed together, and built bonds that still shine like glimmers in my memory.

Answered Prayers

Then came 2019, which was my graduation year. Life beyond school loomed ahead, and I began to pray earnestly about the next step. With a leap of faith, I trusted God to open the right door.

He did. He called me back to Sophia’s Home, not just as a former resident, but to work among the very sisters who had walked the journey with me.

It was clear: God was preparing me for His purpose.

Balancing work and studies wasn’t easy, but it was rewarding. The challenges shaped me. My faith deepened as I learned to rely on God more fully, entrusting each decision to Him.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10

A Mother's Heart

Then came 2022. It was a year that brought a moment I’ll never forget.

Four new little girls arrived at Sophia’s Home. They bonded with me quickly, and one day, they started calling me ‘Ama’ which means ‘mother’. I was stunned. All the other girls had always called me ‘Didi’ (sister). But to these four, I was more than that.

That moment is engraved in my heart. It reminded me of my childhood dream—to be a strong, independent woman. And here I was, living that dream, nurturing and guiding others, just as I had once been nurtured.

This is what God had in store for me all along.

Grateful and Growing

Today, I’m filled with gratitude. I’m grateful to God, to the Sophia’s Home family, and to the many people who prayed for and believed in me.

I am especially thankful to Uncle Saba and Aunty Grace, for their patience and trust over the past five years, allowing me to serve in Sophia’s Home.

I’ve recently completed my university studies and plan to pursue further education. I continue to seek God’s leading, ready to serve Him in whatever path He chooses.

As I move forward, I carry with me the joy of knowing that I am blossoming perfectly in His purpose.
